Overture will again participate in the National High School Musical Theater Awards program.  Outstanding Lead Performer recipients are eligible to audition to be one of two participants, one actor & one actress, sent to New York City for nationals.

 

The National High School Musical Theater Awards (NHSMTA) is a celebration of outstanding student achievement in high school musical theater. The program recognizes individual artistry in vocal, dance and acting performance, and honors teachers and their schools’ commitment to excellence in performing arts education.  


The fifth annual National High School Musical Theater Awards will be held on Monday, July 1, 2013, at the Minskoff Theatre on Broadway. Activities will commence on Tuesday, June 25, with rehearsals, master classes, private coaching and interviews with theater professionals leading up to the live awards show where the Jimmy™ Award for Best Performance by an Actor and Best Performance by an Actress will be presented. The program will conclude on Tuesday, July 2, 2013.

2013 Tommy Award Outstanding Lead Performer recipients only

 

On Saturday, June 1, 2013 auditions will be held for all interested and eligible students.  Tommy Award reviewers will select two students based on the applicant's audition.  Guests and school representatives are welcome and encouraged to attend. 


Students are eligible to audition if they:

  •     Receive an Outstanding Lead Performer Award this season

                 (Tommy Award recipients will be announced in May 2013)

  •     Are available June 25 - July 2, 2013 to go to New York City*
  •     Are able to complete the additional NHSMTA requirements (see below)

 

*There is no financial obligation for the students who are chosen to travel to nationals.  All travel, accommodation, and food costs will be paid for by NHSMTA and Overture Center.

 

 

For the audition students are asked to prepare:

Each auditionee will be sent music to learn and at the audition will work with a choreographer to prepare a group number that will be performed for the reviewing team in addition to:

  •    5 minute video highlighting their performance in their high school musical this year
  •    1 song from their performance this year
  •    1 contrasting piece from musical theater genre (story songs recommended)
  •        Students should arrive prepared and dressed to learn a dance number and should bring sheet music for their songs and a water bottle.
  •     Signed Participant Waiver form (Actor Form | Actress Form)

*The NHSMTA has additional requirements the selected students must complete prior to their arrival in NYC.  Students should consider whether they are able to complete these additional requirements before deciding to audition.

 

The two students who are selected are asked to perform at our annual Take the Stage dinner on June 20, 2013.

If chosen, to represent the Tommy Awards at the NHSMTA, students are required to prepare:

  • Participant Waiver (completed for audition)
  • 5-minute Topic Response Video (filmed at audition)
  • 5-minute video highlighting award winner in their performance in their high school musical (prepared for audition)
  • Headshot (Overture will assist in getting a headshot if the student does not have one)
  • Resume (See Sample Resume)
  • Essay (1 page, double-spaced) describing participants experience while participating in the high school musical
  • Medical Information Form
  • Music Submission Form
  • Prepare four (4) songs:

              The two (2) most prominent songs from Participant's winning performance

              One (1) musical theater ballad and one (1) musical theater up tempo piece.
