This exhibit includes a variety of techniques that can be used to create gourd art. Techniques include carving, pyrography, painting, inks, assemblage and sculpture. Some pieces are abstract, functional, and frivolous. Throughout the exhibit you will find “raw” gourds that are untouched as to highlight the beauty of their natural forms.
The Wisconsin Gourd Society (WGS), founded in 2005, is a not-for-profit business dedicated to educating the public about gourds, their many uses in culture, art, music and their role in history and horticulture. The Organization consists of approximately 150 artists, growers and enthusiasts. Throughout the year the WGS hosts about 25 adult gourd art classes around Wisconsin, as well as several lectures on growing gourds.
WGS welcomes beginning and experienced artists and growers alike. Activities within the group are managed by volunteers who tirelessly seek opportunities to exhibit and teach gourd art. WGS publishes a quarterly newsletter containing historical information, member highlights, tips and techniques and listings on gourd events throughout the country.
