Gallery III, The Nature of Surface, Lisa A. Frank and Mary Hark
Lisa A. Frank and Mary Hark are two distinguished local artists who create works with rich and complex surfaces that reinterpret crafts from traditional domestic environments. Hark’s compositions are sewn, layered and built primarily from her handmade flax and linen papers, constructing paintings that explore the intrinsic properties of handmade paper and embrace the ordinariness of domestic cloth. Frank’s work builds on the model of hand-painted wallpaper design. Each composition is “sewn” together, painstakingly constructed from pieces of her digital scans, photographs, and found imagery of subjects in nature. Traditional textile compositional structures are used as armatures for new image material, linking contemporary and decorative arts.
