Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters

The nonprofit Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters connects people and ideas from all areas of knowledge and all walks of life to celebrate thought, culture and nature in our state and help solve our common problems.

Our four core programs are our art gallery, the James Watrous Gallery, in the Overture Center for the Arts, Wisconsin People & Ideas magazine, Academy Evenings, our free, public forums, and the Wisconsin Idea at the Wisconsin Academy-which recently examined "The Future of Farming and Rural Life in Wisconsin."

The Wisconsin Academy, founded in 1870, is an independent, nonprofit organization, separate from state government and the university. We are funded by grants, by private endowments and by our members. Anybody can enrich their lives with our programs and support them by becoming a member. We encourage you to join!

James Watrous Gallery

The James Watrous Gallery, located on the 3rd floor of the Overture Center, is the premier gallery for Wisconsin visual art. A program of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters, the James Watrous Gallery presents works by Wisconsin artists, Wisconsin art and craft history, works owned by Wisconsin collectors, and exhibitions that bridge the sciences, arts, and humanities.

Our mission is to promote the visual arts in Wisconsin through quality exhibitions and related educational programs.

Academy Evenings

Academy Evenings bring the public together with our state's leading experts, researchers, scholars, and artists to share cutting-edge knowledge in a wide range of fields, highlight our achievements, and address our common problems. These free, public forums are intended to encourage interaction with these leaders in an intimate atmosphere designed to build community. Academy Evenings enlighten and engage the public on important issues of our times, offering everyone a chance to learn from and interact with our state's most noted thinkers. Each presentation includes a question and answer session and offers audience participation through interaction with the presenters.

Academy Evenings take place regularly in the Overture Center for the Arts in Madison and travel to other venues throughout Wisconsin. Academy Evenings presentations are free of charge and open to the public, although donations are very much welcome.
